Hockey legend on Competitiveness

Focus:

Competitiveness – The determination to do something better than others.

Print Body:

Chris Chelios has been in the NHL for over 20 years playing for the Red Wings, Canadians and Blackhawks. He has won numerous Stanley Cup titles, with his lat being in 2008 with Detroit. When asked about being competitive for each game he said, “You have to have a passion for what you are playing in order to be competitive. You can’t get tired as the season progresses. Winning is always important to me no matter where we are in the standings.” It would appear there is an inner drive in successful athletes that causes them to do something better than others – that drive is called competitiveness.

Verse:

“Take young researchers, put them together in virtual seclusion, give them an unprecedented degree of freedom and turn up the pressure by fostering competitiveness.”

James D. Watson

Action Point:

Think of a participatory event in your life when competition was intense. What thoughts or feelings surface in the process?
